This bust of Asclepius, formerly known as ‘Bust of a Bearded Man’ is a partial cast of a 2nd Century AD marble copy of a Greek original sculpture by Timotheos from the early 4th Century BC. The original work, formerly in the Albani collection, was seized by the French in 1718 before its purchase by the Louvre in 1815 where it has remained since (Ma. 639, LL 14).
Asclepius was the god of medicine and health.
