The original marble, sculpted by a Domenico da Salo (Italian, working from 1554-1571) was mentioned to be lined up in the entrance hall of the Palazzo Ruzzini at the Camdo di S. Maria Formosa in Venice. Very little is known about the provenance of the work, the sculptor, and the sitter – Marcantonio Ruzzini.

The Ruzzini family was a patrician family originally emigrating from Constantinople around 1100. Marco Ruzzini was famous for defeating the Genoese in Negroponte in 1358. Carlo Ruzzini became Doge in 1732

The side of the bust is signed:

DNICVS Q PETRI DE SALODIO S.F., M. ANT. RVZ.
